Really, I should call this the bi-monthly update, but honestly there is not much happening in sports.
Blackhawks – Jonathan Toews is coming back so that is huge.
Bulls – the Bulls just signed a bunch of players, with one being a huge name (Lonzo Ball). More on this at a later date.
Cubs – omg i cant even. Since the Cubs traded their big three, there have been 16 games. They are 2-14 in this time. This means that they have literally won two games and lost 14. I’m watching them RN and they are losing 8-0 so this is promising. Meanwhile, Rizzo, Baez, and Bryant all hit homeruns their first weekend away from the Cubs. Good move Tommy.
The most notable event that happened (and sorry, kind of sad because I’m relying on a preseason game to get me through this time) was the Bears/Dolphins game. As mentioned, this is preseason, so none of it matters. Some people get v. upset about preseason games because they say it can increase the likelihood of an injury but I digress.
The Bears are in the midst of a v. difficult decision – they have three quarterbacks (yes this is normal in case one gets injured): Andy Dalton, Justin Fields, and Nick Foles. Nick Foles has won a Superbowl before, but he is getting older in football years, so not exactly starting material (but really, he is my age, so I take offense to being called old). The Bears originally said that Andy Dalton AKA The Red Rifle would be starting this year. However, it looks like this all is going to change because once Justin Fields came in it was game over.
A little background – it is pretty rare for someone to get drafted and then immediately get a starting QB position unless they plan for the Browns (TL;DR: the Browns basically get a new QB every year). Instead, they “shadow” for a year and get the hang of it, learn from the previous QB, etc. Maybe they play a game here and there. However, the Bears have a long history of just bad luck with quarterbacks. Jay Cutler, Mitch Trubisky, Rex Grossman, Kyle Orton (Boiler Up)…the list goes on. So when the Bears picked Justin Fields, people switched that mindset and said he should start. The Bears were adamant that he would not, but on Saturday’s game, he went for 14 of 20. This means that of 20 attempted passes, 14 were caught. That’s 70% – not bad! One of these passes got the Bears a touchdown, so again, another +1 for Fields. He also had 5 rushes (runs), and one of these was for a TD. Based on Saturday’s game, I think Fields will be starting Game 1.
And if you’re asking, I put money on Justin Fields winning Rookie of the Year.
That’s all for today. Let’s hope that the next time I write the Cubs start to win again.
